7 Things to Do in Durham This Winter

Winter is here. And we’re not just talking about Game of Thrones (literally.can’t.wait.for April). Sadly enough, winter has made its way into the Triangle, as evidenced by our early-December preview. But just because we can’t sip mimosas al fresco on a Sunday afternoon until next spring, there’s still plenty of fun to be had in our small but mighty city. And with that, Durham-ites, we bring you… 7 Things to do in Durham this winter that are sure to bring you out of hibernation.

We’ll start with the obvious choice of things to do in Durham on a chilly winter’s evening. A good beer or wine tasting is sure to warm you right up, and serve as the perfect activity for GNO (girls’ night out) or date night. Check out some of our favorites like The Wine Feed, downtown on S. Roxboro St. The Wine Feed tops our list because of its impressive wine bar, full kitchen, and amazing wine classes. They even offer free weekly yoga session – sip & stretch? We’re there.

Honorable mentions include Bar Brunello, West End Wine Bar, The Glass Jug, and Durty Bull Brewing.

It’s no secret that Durham’s food scene is on point. And getting even better. Though we have a TON of restaurant recs in the Dirty D, nothing warms our bellies more than a hearty ramen noodle bowl. RUN, don’t walk to Dashi, where you can find homemade ramen bowls downstairs, and scrumptious small plates upstairs in their izakaya (Japanese pub).

Who’s up for a staycation?! If you’ve got a case of cabin fever, grab your honey and head downtown for a delicious meal and cocktails, followed by a sweet slumber and room service breakfast. 21c Museum Hotel, The Durham Hotel, and Unscripted Durham all offer an ultra cool vibe that makes you feel like you’re in a big city… right down the street! Or if you REALLY want to splurge, head over to the Washington Duke Inn for an evening of elegance that’s sure to impress your S.O.

Durham is known for its wide variety of music and events every night of the week. Dance your winter blues away at any of our local music venues like Motorco, Pinhook, and nearby Cat’s Cradle. Or go big with a concert or musical at the DPAC. We’ll be front row at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on February 12th! 😉

Looking for things to do in Durham and nothing’s hitting the mark? Why not break out of your winter boredom by trying something new? Learn the art of Italian cooking at Melina’s, or head over to Durham Spirits Co. for a wide variety of cooking classes to choose from. Get crafty with blanket making or succulent garden classes at AR Workshop, or ‘Paint and Pour’ at Bull City Craft.

Trivia nights are one of our favorite activities with a group, and you can find trivia-a-plenty in the Bull City. Whether you’re a ‘Friends’ fanatic, a sports nut, or just have general trivia chops, check out some of our favorite spots. Bull City Ciderworks, Fullsteam Brewery, and Clouds Brewing all host trivia on Thursday nights, and winners receive fun prizes or gift cards to the breweries.
