5 Ways to Support Those Affected by the Durham Explosion

In the wake of yesterday’s explosion in downtown Durham, we find ourselves searching for ways to help. After seeing the community come together in fierce support of all those affected by this tragedy, we know we’re not alone in the quest for information on where and how to lend a hand and send donations. And so, we’ve compiled this list of 5 ways you can help or donate to the cause:

Drop off a home cooked meal to your local police or fire station.

Not only are police, fire fighters, EMS and others often working longer hours following tragic events, but a home cooked meal is a low cost way to show our First Responders that you appreciate their bravery and hard work. Here are addresses for the fire and police stations nearest to the explosion site:

  • Durham Police Headquarters: 602 E Main Street, Durham NC, 27701
  • Durham Fire Department, Station 1: 139 E Morgan St, Durham, NC 27701
    • Donate funds directly.

While we encourage you to do some research of your own on the legitimacy of any fundraising campaign, we came across a few fundraising links in this Herald Sun article that were created to help support those impacted:

      • Help Kaffeinate Rebuil
      • Help Affected Restaurant Workers
      • Support Families & Businesses Directly Impacted
        • Share helpful information.

The same Herald Sun article also mentions, “Dominion Energy is operating a Claims Operations Center at Maverick’s Smokehouse and Taproom on West Main Street, where it will offer affected residents help with food and housing, the company said in a news release. People who live and work in the area can also call Dominion Energy’s help line at 877-592-7762.” Help spread the word via social media or other outlets to help direct affected individuals to the right place.

          Donate food to First Responders.

We’re told that Maverick’s Smokehouse and Taproom on West Main Street is also collecting food donations for first responders, such as hot dogs, buns and more. We’re not 100% sure on how to best inquire about most needed donation items, but you might be able to get this information by calling the Dominion Energy help line listed above (877-592-7762).

Bring your crew out to Boxcar Bar + Arcade in downtown Durham this Sunday.

We’ll be donating 10% of all bar and pizza sales this Sunday, April 14th, to organizations that are supporting families, businesses and others directly affected by this recent event. We’ll also be offering one free pizza of choice to local first responders who show their badge when placing an order at our Pizza Kitchen.
